Heritage & Craftsmanship
Madson Black is a British atelier dedicated to the design, manufacture, and restoration of exceptional lighting. From historic royal residences to contemporary private interiors, we create lighting of enduring quality, precision, and architectural presence.
Founded in 2000 by James Hall, Madson Black builds upon a family legacy of chandelier design and manufacture spanning more than seven decades. From our workshops in Oxfordshire and our London office, we undertake commissions across the world, combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design thinking and advanced engineering. Although our work extends occasionally into architectural metalwork and furniture, our practice is fundamentally centred on lighting. Over 99% of what we do is dedicated to bespoke lighting of the highest level.
Every project begins with an idea. We develop each commission through consultation, sketches, mood boards, visualisation, and technical drawings. All components are produced from base materials within our workshops. Metalwork is fabricated, assembled, and hand-finished in-house, allowing complete control over quality and detail. This integrated approach ensures continuity from concept through to completion.
Our relationship with a project often continues long after installation. In many instances, we provide specialist cleaning, maintenance, and conservation support for decades, ensuring each piece retains its integrity and performance. Lighting is not simply created or restored—it is cared for and sustained.

Heritage & Contemporary
Madson Black works across the full spectrum of lighting design. We restore and conserve chandeliers of historic significance, while also creating contemporary lighting for private residences, penthouses, and architectural interiors worldwide. From a country house to a contemporary penthouse in Mayfair or New York, each commission is approached with the same discipline: to create lighting that is specific to its setting, technically resolved, and beautifully made.
We combine restoration-grade materials with modern compliance and technical understanding. Our archive allows us to restore and interpret period designs with exceptional accuracy.

Selected Works
For many decades, we have delivered bespoke lighting for a broad spectrum of projects, including private residences, landmark buildings and internationally significant interiors.
Our Capabilities
From conception to installation, we guide each project through a meticulous process that honors both vision and craft.
Design and Manufacture
Every piece is produced in our Oxfordshire atelier, where traditional craftsmanship and advanced manufacturing come together to create lighting of exceptional quality and precision. Our team of highly skilled artisans and technicians work across metal, glass and electrical disciplines, delivering complex and highly refined pieces. Using a combination of hand manufacture, specialist finishing, fibre laser cutting and large-scale 3D printing, we produce lighting that spans both contemporary commissions and historically informed work.
From initial material preparation through to final assembly, wiring and certification, every stage is handled with care, control and attention to detail. This allows us to produce work that is not only visually refined, but technically robust, long-lasting and suitable for the demands of residential, commercial, hospitality and heritage environments.
Our atelier brings together traditional hand skills and modern production capability, allowing us to respond to a wide range of briefs, from historically informed chandeliers and decorative fittings to contemporary bespoke lighting pieces with complex forms, finishes and technical requirements.
At the heart of our work is the making.
Contemporary Commissions
We design and manufacture highly contemporary lighting for some of the world’s most refined interiors. Working with architects, interior designers and private clients, we create sculptural and technically complex pieces that push the boundaries of traditional chandelier design—integrating modern materials, advanced LED systems and innovative manufacture techniques. Each commission is entirely bespoke, balancing bold contemporary expression with enduring quality and craftsmanship.
Every contemporary commission begins with a clear understanding of the interior, the creative ambition and the technical requirements of the piece. Whether the brief calls for a dramatic centrepiece, a refined architectural installation or a completely original lighting concept, our role is to translate the design vision into a beautifully made and technically resolved object.
Our work combines creative exploration with precise engineering and skilled making. From proportion, structure and material selection through to lighting performance, manufacture and installation detail, every element is considered to ensure the final piece feels both expressive and enduring.
Lighting for the world’s most refined interiors.
Restoration & Conservation
Our restoration and conservation work is recognised at the highest level, combining deep historical understanding with exceptional technical expertise and a rigorous, conservation-led approach. We work across royal residences, historic houses and significant public buildings, restoring lighting using the finest materials and time-honoured techniques, ensuring the preservation of original character wherever possible. Alongside this, we discreetly integrate modern engineering and electrical systems to meet contemporary safety and performance standards. Our ongoing involvement in the long-term servicing and care of heritage lighting within major refurbishment programmes, including works associated with Buckingham Palace and other royal household properties, reflects the level of trust placed in our expertise.
Every restoration project begins with a careful understanding of the object, its history, condition and setting. We approach each piece with sensitivity, ensuring that any intervention is appropriate, considered and respectful of the original design, materials and craftsmanship.
Our work balances preservation with performance. Where possible, original components, finishes and details are retained, stabilised and restored. Where modern requirements must be introduced, they are integrated discreetly, ensuring the lighting can continue to function safely while maintaining its historic character and visual integrity.
Preserving history with care, expertise & respect.
